WHY THE "SCHOOL OF POP"?

With all the known benefits that music has in the education of our children, why is it that many children find lessons or music practice to be a chore instead of a pleasure?  Why is it that most children, including those who love programs like school band or orchestra, do not spend their free time listening to the same music styles that they are asked to perform?  Why do some kids think these programs are not interesting to them?  It is not because they don't like music.  In fact, most kids listen to music frequently, and some of them even dream of performing music.   They just don't dream of performing classical or band music.  They love the music that is heard in many sounds and styles the world over-- they love pop music!

Pop music means "popular music" and it is what we hear playing on the radio and overhead in every shopping center.  It's what we hear on TV and in the movies, and it's what the kids are excited to listen to in their free time.   Why can't they learn to experience and create the kind of music that they already love?

Popular music can be dance music, rock music, country western, or even rap.  There can be good pop music in every style.  Sharing good pop music can be a unique way in which performer and listener connect on a personal level.  Popular music is an inherent part of human culture and a valid art of expression.   Even wise spiritual leaders have applauded good pop music and have celebrated joyfully with dancing and song.   When you stop to think about it, much of what we consider to be "classical music" was merely popular music of the time, written with the same motivation as our modern pop music-- to entertain, and to artistically express oneself through music.

I hope to give the youth a new way to experience music, love it, and share it.
That's why I've created The Durrant School of Pop.

My name is Todd Durrant, and I have spent nearly two decades working in the music industry and interacting with artists around the world both creatively and on a business level.   I've had a life-long love of popular music and have spent uncountable hours writing and recording songs, as well as programing electronic music both for myself and for others.   I have BA degree in music with an emphasis in sound recording technology.

I hope to offer a new way for youth of all ages to fall in love with music, create their own music, and share their talents with others.
